Blackjack Basics

The concept of 21 or blackjack is pretty simple. In order to win you have to beat the dealers hand without going over 21. It is important to remember you are playing against the dealer in the game and not the other players, your goal is to beat the dealers hands. The cards are dealt in one of two ways, they are hand held or by a shoe if multiple decks are being used. If they are being hand held then the player will receive the cards face down, and if they are from a show they will be turned up. After they have been dealt the player must decide how to play his hand, if he needs more cards or not. Then the dealer finishes his hand , and collects or pays out the winnings.

Blackjack Card Values

The deck of blackjack contains all the playing cards and have assigned values for each. The playing deck will use all four suits of cards. The cards with numbers from two to ten will have the face value of the card, so if it is a ten it is worth ten . The cards of jack, queen and king are worth ten. The ace is the unique card of the deck holding a value of either a one, or 11. The value is determined by the player if it keeps him from going over 21 or places him closer to it.

Stand - This occurs when you have completed your hand, and do not want to add any more cards.

Double Down - When a player is allowed to increase their bet after receiving the first two cards deal, and is allowed to only receive one more card for their hand.

Split - This is the process in where the player receives a pair of cards of equal value, then with an additional bet the pair is split into two hands. These two hands are then played independent of each other, following the normal rules of blackjack.
